To be an American you can be very diverse or even different from others. Not one American is the same as the next. America is a very diverse country for many reasons. For example, religious freedom is allowed which is rare, in my eyes, in the world today. We are very much in the 21st century while other countries seem to live in the past. I understand that we are one of the wealthiest countries, but they don't seem to modernize with what they have. Americans have many different types of people; such as the punk rockers, the preppy, the emos, the stoners, and mainly the people who don't know who/what they are. I personally believe that you have to be an individual to survive in the country. You can use where you have came from or what you plan to do in your near future.
Lets take Lady Gaga for instance. She went into the VMA's last year with a bird cage on her head and today she is one of the top selling artists. People in America crave individuality and thrive on people who give them their "fix". Some Americans are not honest; in my eyes to be a true American you have to be honest. You also should take every opportunity you can and chase the dream. Hints the nickname " the land of opportunities". I truly believe that you need to work hard for what you get and not be surprised if you don't work hard and get little. Unless you're Paris Hilton or a another spoiled daddy's girl.
I feel that American Literature portrays some life accurately, while other times it is completely off. The way stories are written now-a-days can stray from the truth, while back-way-back-when they were a lot more accurate. I don't enjoy reading very much literature myself, but do occasionally. Mainly because I get tested on stories and rely on my grades to promise a bright future.
To be an American you must be an individual. You must be strong as a person, a friend, and even a family member. If you choose to succeed in this country you must also work for what you want and not expect things to be handed to you left and right. This country is called "the land of opportunities"...but if you don't take advantage of them then you are truly wasting your time here.
